FERTILITY & REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH
When Should You Start Acupuncture for IVF?
If you’re preparing for in vitro fertilization (IVF), you may be wondering when to start acupuncture and whether the timing of your treatments makes a difference.
The short answer is that there is no medically established best time to start acupuncture for IVF. While this article explores common approaches to acupuncture throughout the IVF process, there is no single treatment schedule that works for everyone.
At Healify, we encourage you to book a meet and greet with Dr. Frank Yeh, Acupuncturist, to discuss your fertility journey and develop a personalized acupuncture treatment plan based on your needs.
IVF acupuncture at a glance
You don’t need to book every stage. Choose the appointments that fit your schedule and budget, and Frank can help you decide where to focus.
| IVF stage | Typical timing |
|---|---|
| Before ovarian stimulation | Tailored to your menstrual cycle |
| During ovarian stimulation | One to two times per week |
| Egg retrieval | The day before, and 24–48 hours after |
| Embryo transfer | Immediately before and after, on the same day |
| Two-week wait | Once, 2–6 days after transfer |
If you choose only one stage, embryo transfer day is the most researched time to receive acupuncture.
What the research says
Numerous studies have investigated the effectiveness of acupuncture alongside IVF. Although not all studies have demonstrated improvements in IVF success rates, all studies have concluded that acupuncture is a safe complementary treatment alongside IVF.
At Healify, we offer fertility acupuncture with the goal of maximizing your chances of a successful IVF outcome.
Why Do People Consider Acupuncture During IVF?
IVF can be physically, emotionally, and financially demanding. Between fertility medications, blood tests, ultrasounds, medical procedures, and waiting for results, it’s understandable that many people look for additional ways to feel supported throughout the process.
Some common reasons people consider acupuncture during IVF include:
- Making time for relaxation and self-care.
- Seeking additional support while managing the emotional demands of IVF.
- Addressing symptoms or discomfort associated with fertility treatments.
- Establishing a consistent wellness routine that helps them feel supported throughout their IVF cycle.
When to Start Acupuncture Before Your IVF Cycle
At your meet and greet, Frank will review your circumstances and explain how acupuncture may complement your fertility treatment, so you can make an informed decision about whether acupuncture is right for you. This conversation may include:
- Your anticipated or current IVF schedule and important treatment milestones.
- Previous fertility treatments and relevant medical history.
- Current medications, supplements, and other health considerations.
- Your reasons for considering acupuncture.
- Your treatment preferences, availability, and budget.
Acupuncture During Different Stages of IVF
The goals and timing of acupuncture change as you progress through your IVF cycle. Some patients begin before ovarian stimulation, while others start closer to egg retrieval or embryo transfer. The timeline below is a general overview rather than a medically required schedule.
Before Ovarian Stimulation
Frank begins with a comprehensive evaluation of your health history, including your menstrual cycle and reproductive health, to identify areas where acupuncture may help.
Treatments are tailored to your individual constitution and the phases of your menstrual cycle, much like acupuncture for women who are trying to conceive naturally.
During Ovarian Stimulation
During ovarian stimulation, your fertility team will typically monitor follicle development through regular ultrasounds and blood tests.
Acupuncture during the IVF stimulation phase is particularly beneficial because it increases oxygenated blood flow to the ovaries and enhances the delivery of stimulation medications, such as Follistim or Gonal-F.
At Healify, we adjust treatment based on your monitoring results, including lead follicle size, the number of developing follicles, and estrogen levels. Once ovarian stimulation begins, acupuncture one to two times per week is highly recommended.
The primary goals of acupuncture during this stage include:
- Improve Follicular Blood Flow: Increase blood circulation to the ovaries to support healthy follicle development and maturation.
- Reduce Side Effects: Help alleviate emotional strain, bloating, and other discomforts that may arise from IVF stimulation medications.
Before and After Egg Retrieval
Egg retrieval is a medical procedure performed to collect mature eggs from the ovaries. Following the procedure, some patients experience bloating, cramping, fatigue, or abdominal tenderness.
- The Day Before Egg Retrieval: Acupuncture can enhance uterine blood flow, which is beneficial to egg quality, while helping calm the nervous system. This can reduce pre-procedure anxiety and physical discomfort.
- 24–48 Hours After Egg Retrieval: Gentle acupuncture treatments focus on reducing inflammation, alleviating pain, and supporting your body’s preparation for an upcoming fresh or frozen embryo transfer.
Before and After Embryo Transfer
One of the most extensively researched and important times to receive acupuncture during IVF is on the day of embryo transfer.
A landmark study by Paulus et al. (2002) found that women who received acupuncture immediately before and after embryo transfer had a clinical pregnancy rate of 42.5%, compared with 26.3% in the control group.
A Delphi-consensus randomized controlled trial in 2018 reinforced these findings. Women who received acupuncture during ovarian stimulation and immediately before and after embryo transfer had a live birth rate of 42%, compared with 16% in women who did not receive acupuncture (Homburg et al., 2018).
At Healify, we offer acupuncture immediately before and after embryo transfer on the same day. We recommend coordinating your appointments with Frank in advance to accommodate your fertility clinic’s transfer schedule.
During the Two-Week Wait
The period between embryo transfer and your pregnancy test is commonly known as the two-week wait. For many patients, this can be one of the most emotionally challenging parts of the IVF process.
We recommend an additional acupuncture session within 2–6 days following embryo transfer, during the implantation window. The main goals of treatment during this stage include:
- Calm the Nervous System: Help reduce stress hormones, such as cortisol, which can negatively affect implantation.
- Support Implantation Energetics: From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, acupuncture helps foster an optimal internal environment for embryo implantation.
- Relieve Anxiety: Provide emotional support and promote relaxation during a period that can involve considerable anticipation and uncertainty.
Is Acupuncture Timing Different for Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)?
Yes. A frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycle typically does not involve ovarian stimulation for egg retrieval.
In a medicated FET cycle, estrogen and progesterone may be prescribed to prepare the uterine lining and coordinate the timing of embryo transfer.
In a natural or modified-natural FET cycle, the treatment schedule is generally based on ovulation monitoring, sometimes with additional medication.
The fundamentals of fertility acupuncture remain similar, and Frank will adjust your treatment plan to your type of FET cycle, your fertility clinic’s schedule, and your individual health needs.
Common questions
Is it too late to start acupuncture after beginning IVF injections?
No. There is no proven minimum preparation period for acupuncture before IVF. Frank can recommend a plan that fits your current IVF schedule, even if you have already started stimulation medications.
Should I have acupuncture on embryo transfer day?
Yes. We recommend acupuncture immediately before and after embryo transfer, and Frank can schedule your appointments around your clinic’s transfer time.
Can I have acupuncture after embryo transfer?
Yes. We generally recommend an additional session within 2–6 days following embryo transfer, during the two-week wait.
Should I tell my fertility clinic I’m having acupuncture?
Yes. Your fertility team should know about any complementary treatments you’re receiving, including acupuncture, so they can coordinate your care around important IVF procedures.
